*Update*
The pandemic situation has been highly uncertain and the RINGS Steering Committee considers that it is not fully societally responsible to organize the workshop as originally planned under this circumstance. Therefore, we decided to postpone the workshop to 27-30 June, 2022.
We highly value face-to-face discussion, so we really hope that most of you (if not all) will make this trip to the Arctic Norway. The Steering Committee is discussing holding this as a hybrid workshop with online participation in some sessions and depending on the pandemic situation, the workshop may be moved completely online.
The Steering Committee is revising the workshop program and will give more details in March. We appreciate your understanding and continued interests and contributions to RINGS.
Original announcement:
SCAR Action Group RINGS will organize a 4-day workshop in beautiful Arctic Norway. The primary goal of this workshop is to generate synergies and international cooperation to develop more accurate and complete reference bed topography data for robust assessments of ice discharge from all around Antarctica. The secondary goal is to discuss relevant science plans for the ice sheet’s marginal zone. To achieve these goals, we aim to have diverse, multidisciplinary participants including (but not limited to) specialists in geophysics, geology, glaciology, oceanography, satellite observations, and modeling of the ice, ocean and atmosphere.
Throughout the workshop and associated pre/post online sessions, we will quantify the existing knowledge gaps and develop community protocols to systematically fill them. We also aim to implement research priorities as preliminary survey plans so that the necessary data can be acquired in a more complete way in the near future. The Action Group will prepare an article to summarize the outcome of this workshop in 2022 and submit for peer-review as the final deliverable of the Action Group which will end in March 2023.
We welcome both Action Group members and non-members from multiple disciplines related to RINGS. We uphold SCAR’s values of diversity and inclusion (https://scarpngmtn.nimpr.uk/about-us/values/) and strongly encourage Early Career Researchers to attend the workshop. All participants are expected to actively take part in the discussion throughout the workshop, and are required to attend the workshop for the entire period.
The workshop is hosted by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) at Malangen Resort near Tromsø (https://www.malangenresort.com/) with financial support from British Antarctic Survey, Technical University of Denmark, SCAR, SCAR’s Physical Science Group, the Research Council of Norway, and NPI. The venue is blocked for maximum 60 participants and we invite all interested individuals to register. The full registration fee is approximately 700 Euro including all lodging/food during the workshop and transportation betweenTromsø and the venue. Please indicate in the registration form if financial assistance is needed to partly cover your registration fee. We will offer travel support to Tromsø as well mainly for early career researchers and those from countries with developing Antarctic programs.
To register your interest, please visit the registration page. The official registration deadline was Monday, 7 November. The registration system will remain open leading up to the workshop, and late registrations will be accomodated if possible.
We will contact all registered people in a few weeks for further arrangement.
