Looking for Early Career Scientists to join RINGS Action Group

Friday, September 17th, 2021

RINGS logoThe RINGS Steering Committee is seeking early career scientists to join SCAR’s new RINGS Action Group, and an APECS representative to RINGS. RINGS was established in early 2021, with the aim of developing synergies and international collaborations to map the critically undersampled bed topography around the Antarctic Ice Sheet margin using geophysics. The ultimate goal of RINGS is to obtain a reference bed topography dataset to accurately estimate the present and future contribution of Antarctica to sea level rise. RINGS works closely with SCAR’s Scientific Research Program INSTANT and many other relevant initiatives. For more information, please visit: https://scarpngmtn.nimpr.uk/science/rings/about/.

The successful applicants will contribute to video conferencing, planning discussions, international meetings, and other RINGS Action Group activities. The applicants should be well-motivated early career scientists (up to 7 years post-PhD) working on topics that are directly relevant to RINGS using: radar or any geophysical methods, satellite remote sensing, or models of ice, ocean or climate. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to a high-profile scientific endeavour that is globally significant and high-impact, and to build their network and profile with researchers from around the world. Mapping the Antarctic Ice Sheet margin will require a long-term effort and strong international collaborations, and the involvement of early career scientists from a broad geographical spread is paramount. We uphold SCAR’s values of diversity and inclusion (https://scarpngmtn.nimpr.uk/about-us/values/) and strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply for these positions, recognising the inherent value of diverse perspectives in scientific endeavours.

To apply as an APECS representative, please send the following information to info@apecs.is by 30 September 2021:

  • Your CV
  • A statement of Interest (maximum 500 words) that includes your research background, your motivation for joining the RINGS Action Group, and how it might benefit your career.

Qualified ECRs not affiliated with APECS can directly contact RINGS steering committee member Dr Felicity McCormack (felicity.mccormack@monash.edu).

For specific questions on this position, including questions about your eligibility, please contact RINGS steering committee member Dr Felicity McCormack (felicity.mccormack@monash.edu), and we will do what we can to support your application.

Best regards,
RINGS Steering Committee
