The SCAR Scientific Research Programme – Integrated Science to Inform Antarctic and Southern Ocean Conservation (Ant-ICON) are recruiting a Secretary to join the Ant-ICON Steering Committee.
This role will be an opportunity for early-career researchers, particularly students and those new to SCAR, to gain experience in project management, expand their network, familiarize themselves with SCAR and SCAR groups, as well as contribute to the activities of Ant-ICON. The position of Secretary is an unpaid, volunteer role (we are all volunteers in Ant-ICON), and could be occupied for the duration of the Ant-ICON mandate (through the end of 2028).
The Secretary will work with the Ant-ICON Chief Officers to:
- Plan the monthly SC meetings: schedule and create agendas for meetings, send out reminders to the SC, take minutes, and share minutes with the SC following meetings.
- Plan the biannual AC meeting: schedule and create agendas for the meeting, send out reminders to the AC, take minutes, and share minutes with the AC following meetings.
- Provide administrative support to the research themes in their activities: this will vary based on the theme and their needs, but may include drafting emails to the Ant-ICON community, running recruitment calls for project members, etc.
- Support the SC generally in creating reports to SCAR, as well as developing communications to the wider SCAR community.
- Any other responsibilities that align with the Secretary’s area of expertise or broader interests where these intersect with Ant-ICON’s mission and goals.
To apply, please fill out the following form: https://eu.jotform.com/build/242523760628357 by 23:59 UTC on Wednesday, 9 October 2024.
All early-career researchers (<5 years post-PhD) are welcome to apply. We will give preference towards:
- Postgraduate students;
- Applicants with little or no previous experience with SCAR, provided that they have the willingness and appetite to learn about SCAR, its programmes and subsidiary bodies, and governance structures;
- Applicants whose research interests align with Ant-ICON;
- Applicants from countries with developing Antarctic programmes (e.g., SCAR Associate Member countries); and
- Applicants from developing economies or economies in transition (according to the UN definition, countries listed in tables B and C).
If you have any questions about the role or the application process, please reach out to Ant-ICON Chief Officer Jilda Caccavo ergo@jildacaccavo.com.
