Saroma Sea ice School 2026
The Saroma Sea Ice School 2026 will be held from 28 February to 9 March 2026 in Saroma-ko Lagoon, Hokkaido Island, Japan.
The Saroma Sea Ice School is an interdisciplinary winter field school for early-career scientists – primarily PhD students, but also open to Master’s students and early postdocs – focused on the interactions among sea ice, snow, clouds, and aerosols in polar regions. Through a combination of classroom lectures, expert-led workshops, and hands-on fieldwork (including sea ice coring and atmospheric sampling), participants will explore the key processes that shape the Arctic and Antarctic climate systems.
Organised by the BEPSII, CIceClouds, and CATCH working groups, the program aims to equip the next generation of sea ice researchers for Antarctica In Sync and the International Polar Year among other international polar initiatives.
The SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM will include Frontal lectures, field and lab work on the following topics:
- Sea ice and snow physics and biogeochemical processes
- Sea ice biogeochemical modelling
- Gas fluxes at the ocean–ice–atmosphere interfaces
- Primary and secondary aerosols in the sea ice environment
- Atmospheric observation and modelling
- Clouds formation in polar marine boundary layer
- Interactions with underlying water
The application is now open and closes on the 30th of September 2025.
More information can be found here. We look forward to seeing you in Hokkaido!
